SD 308 Social Studies Department Mission Statement:
It is the mission of the Social Studies Department to provide students with the academic background and skills to become active and informed citizens who can function successfully in an increasingly complex, multicultural, and changing world. Teachers will partner with students, families, and the community to develop enduring understandings in the social studies, which will lead to a well-informed and civic-minded citizenry that can sustain and build on democratic traditions.
DESCRIPTION Of SOCIOLOGY 1 FROM THE COURSE CATALOG:
This course provides students with an overview of the field of sociology and its foundational ideas and concepts. Students will learn to think like a sociologist, utilize concepts and tools needed for understanding human social behavior, and recognize how social forces impact our lives. The course examines current events and social issues in America & the world. Topics to be covered include cultural diversity, American values, conformity, social control & prisons, social interaction, development of
personality, influence of mass media, dating and adulthood.
